Praise God. The topic today was Pentecostalism and Dr. Bolger showed the class a movie that helped me understand better the modern roots of this movement. The Azusa Street Revival was the subject of the movie and Dr. Bolger’s lecture. Dr. Bolger also looked at the Pentecostal movement with regards to the “Church Worksheet.”

Today Dr. Bolger explained further the formation of the Lutheran Church as it pertained to Christian Community, Christian Mission, and Christian Leadership. The section on Christian Leadership sparked some good discussion in class amongst the students and Dr. Bolger. This subject has many implications into my own church experiences and I was glad that I attended class today to hear the banter. The concept of the secular and sacred divide in churches today was what I needed to hear after pondering these issues for so long.

Today seemed like a really long day in class. Dr. Bolger covered a lot of ground. We watched two movies and discussed two very different topics. The first topic was the New Monasticism movement that Shane Claiborne typifies. This was very new to me and interesting to know more about. The second subject was the Protestant Reformation and Lutheranism. Martin Luther was a radical for his time and to draw a comparison so is Shane Claiborne a radical for this modern time. Did Dr. Bolger intend to make this comparison?

The new ecclesiological manifestations of Fresh Expression were fascinating. I wish that Graham would have expanded more on what these manifestations look like on the ground in the United Kingdom. Dr. Bolger spoke well and I felt his charge as marching orders to contextualize the Gospel Message in my future ministry as a cross-cultural missionary.

At the end of Dr. Bolger’s discussion today on Christianity in the 16th century it really struck me how horrible Christians were…and are. Christianity, as Dr. Bolger explained, has been a joint (and married together) operation of the Kingdom of God and the Church. He also mentioned that this has not always been the case, and cited the time of Christianity before Constantine and a present time. Very interesting class discussion today.

Today we watched a movie about the foundations of the Eastern and Roman Orthodox churches. The movie was a bit dry, however it was rich in historical and current information that help to bring me into a better understanding of Orthodoxy. Dr. Bolger’s lecture was also interesting because he spoke briefly about Eastern Europe. Because I have been to Estonia and seen the Orthodox churches it was much more real to me than simply watching a movie.
